Sealing Marble: Protecting Natural Stone for a Lifetime of Beauty

Sealing Marble: Protecting Natural Stone for a Lifetime of Beauty

Why Does Marble Need Sealing?

Marble is a naturally porous stone, which means that water, oils, and everyday liquids can gradually absorb into its surface. Left unprotected, this can lead to stains and discolouration over time. Sealing creates a subtle, invisible barrier that reduces absorption, helping your marble stay as beautiful as the day it was installed.

How Often Should You Seal Marble?

As a guide, sealing should be carried out once a year. However, surfaces that see frequent use such as basins or countertops, may need more attention.

A simple water bead test will tell you when it’s time:

  • If droplets sit on the surface, your seal is still effective
  • If the marble darkens as water absorbs, it’s time to reseal

What You’ll Need

At Haddon, we recommend STAIN-PROOF Original™ Sealer, a premium formula designed to protect marble without altering its appearance. You will also need:

  • Clean, dry microfiber cloths or towels
  • a solvent-safe applicator (paintbrush, lambswool applicator, or sprayer)
  • Protective gloves
  • A mild, pH-neutral marble cleaner
  • Adequate ventilation

How to Seal Marble: Step-by-Step

1. Clean the surface
Wash thoroughly with a pH-neutral cleaner to remove any dirt or oils. Avoid acidic or abrasive products. Allow the marble to dry completely, ideally for 24–48 hours.

2. Apply the sealer
Wearing gloves, apply STAIN-PROOF Original™ Sealer generously with your chosen applicator. Spread evenly, keeping the surface wet with sealer for at least 15 minutes. Add more product if it begins to absorb.

3. Let it penetrate
Allow the sealer to soak in, but do not let it dry on the surface. After 15–20 minutes, any excess should still be visible.

4. Wipe away excess
Using a clean, dry microfiber cloth, remove all remaining product. The marble should look dry and streak-free.

5. Allow to cure
Leave the surface to cure for around 24 hours. During this time, keep the marble dry and free from use or foot traffic.

Additional Tips

  • For highly porous marble, apply a second coat after 10–15 minutes.
  • Always test on a small, discreet area first.
  • Repeat the water bead test regularly to know when resealing is needed.
